What share of the $42.7 billion awarded to small businesses went to the top 100?

In FY 2001, what share of the $42.7 billion in prime contracts awarded to all small businesses did just the Top 100 small businesses receive? A) 2% B) 19% C) 30% D) 54%

Small firms received approximately 20 percent of the $214 billion in prime contracts awarded by federal agencies to all firms in FY 2001, but how were these dollars distributed among the small businesses themselves? Using Eagle Eye's FPC we can answer this question in about two minutes. Here's how:

Fire up the FY 2001 application and clear all active search criteria. Do this by clicking the small funnel icon on the Active View toolbar and clicking the Clear View Button in the View Definition dialog. Finish by clicking the Apply button and returning to the Agency Active View Screen.

Next, click either the Search Wizard or Advanced Search buttons on the Active View Sidebar. In the search dialogs that appear, identify and select the Contract Fields group. Among this group will be a search field called Type of Business. Select this field and click the binoculars icon to call up the field's index.

In the index you will see that Type of Business Code A refers to 8(a) and SDB firms. Type B refers to Other Small Business. Highlight both codes simultaneously by first clicking Code A and, while holding down the shift key, clicking Code B. With both codes highlighted, press Enter to initiate the search. When the hits have queued up click the Apply button to finalize the search and view the results.

The white number in the blue stripe at the top of the screen tells us that small firms received a total of $42.7 bilion in prime contracts in FY 2001. Jot this number down. Next, switch to the Parent Company Active View Screen and click the Print Screen button at the top of the data grid. With the Output Destination set to Preview, click the Top X records button and set the counter to 100. Click the Print/Run button and go to the end of the report and you will see an $8 billion figure appear under the View $ column. This is our FY 2001 Top 100 small business dollar total. $8 billion is 18.7% of the overall, $42.7 billion total making B the correct answer to this week's quiz.
